The Eucalyptus Design Story: How a California Tree Became a Cali Life Co. Print

Drive up Highway 1 in Northern California and you cannot miss the eucalyptus trees. Tall, blue-gray, peeling bark, that smell that hits you the second the windows are down. The eucalyptus print on the Cali Life Co. tee started right there, on a coastal drive in 2023, with a sketchbook and a coffee that went cold.

This is the design story behind one of our most-asked-about pieces.

Why eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is not native to California. It was brought in from Australia in the 1850s, planted along ranches and railroads, and now it is everywhere along the coast. It is invasive in some places and beloved in others. That tension is part of why we wanted it on a tee. It is a California icon that is not actually from here, and that is a more honest version of California than the surfboard cliche.

The smell, the shape of the leaves, the peeling bark, the silver-green color: all of it became the visual brief.

How the design got made

The original sketch was line-only. Botanical, not stylized. The artist worked from real leaves pulled from a tree on a coastal property south of Santa Cruz.

Three rounds of revision later we had the final version: a single eucalyptus branch, leaves in proportion, no shading, two colorways. It prints clean on cotton because the line weight is consistent. It holds up after 50 washes because we kept the design simple.

We tested it on three blanks before we picked the final tri-blend. The print sits flat, the shirt drapes right, the design does not crack at the shoulder seam.

What the eucalyptus tee says

It says you have spent time on the California coast and you noticed the trees. It says you care about a botanical design that is real, not a clip-art palm tree. It says you would rather buy a soft-hand tee with a story than a mass-print graphic.

That is the customer the eucalyptus tee is for. We sold out the first run in three weeks.

FAQ

Is the eucalyptus design original to Cali Life Co.?

Yes. Drawn by a California-based artist working from real eucalyptus leaves on the coast. Not licensed, not stock.

What blank is the tee printed on?

Tri-blend cotton, polyester, rayon. Soft hand, true to size, slight stretch, holds shape after wash.

How do I keep the print from cracking?

Cold wash, inside out, hang dry. The print is screen-printed, which holds longer than DTG when treated right.

Is eucalyptus actually from California?

No. Eucalyptus was introduced from Australia in the 1850s. It is now one of the most recognizable trees on the California coast despite being non-native. Part of why the design feels honest about California.

Do you ship internationally?

US shipping only. Free on orders over $35.

Bottom line

The eucalyptus print is the kind of design we built Cali Life Co. to make: original art, real reference, honest story, small drops, US shipping. If you have ever rolled a window down on Highway 1, you already know why this print exists.
